How to care for a wire-haired dog
I am convinced that after smooth-haired dogs, wire-haired is the most convenient way to care for. These include schnauzers and a number of terriers (wire-haired fox-terrier, airedale, norwich terrier, etc.)
One of the wire-haired breeds - Airedale
These dogs do not fade, have no smell, trimming can be done once every 3-4 months, and if the owner prefers to shave, it is carried out as necessary.
You can learn to trim the dog yourself. When the hair has grown and you see that the dog begins to “lay off” the hair in the house, start to “pinch” it slowly.
For trimming, you need a special knife or stone, in appearance resembling pumice.
You can remove the wool gradually, as it grows, or wait until all the wool has “matured” and removed everything “in bulk”.
The duration of the procedure itself can be different, because the hair of each dog has its own qualities (for someone it is more rigid, for someone it is smaller in volume, and for someone it is more undercoat). On average, trimming, for example, a miniature schnauzer takes about 2 hours, and a cosmetic haircut takes another 30 minutes.
If a wire-haired dog is not trimmed, but shaved or shaved, the structure of the coat changes: it becomes softer, gets tangled up, loses its water-repellent properties, and protects it not so well from the weather, and the dog begins to molt. It is possible to restore the rigid structure of the coat, but it will take a lot of time (not one or two trimings). Question: Do you need this if you think it is more convenient to shave the dog?
Some owners hesitate to trim the dogs, fearing that it hurts. However, if the wool is “ripe”, it leaves freely. Yes, this is not stroking, but the pet does not feel pain and may well endure this procedure without anesthesia. The four-legged friend does not experience severe discomfort.
If, for some reason, trimming is urgently needed, and the coat is still not quite easy to leave, some pain is possible, but the dog is still able to adapt to it.
Which is better: to cut or trim - each owner decides independently. If you want to have a true representative of the breed, so that the hair “works” correctly, so that the pet does not fade and does not smell, then, of course, trimming is necessary. If it is more convenient for you to cut and you are ready to put up with the fact that the coat becomes soft - you can cut or shave. The dog itself, by and large, doesn’t care.
Wire-haired dogs are not recommended to be washed often, as the hair becomes softer from frequent washing.
If you just have a pet and it has a hard coat, you only need a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner or “2 in 1” to wash it.
If you look after an “exhibition fighter”, I would recommend washing it once a month with a moisturizing shampoo, since the wool needs to be nourished and stimulated to grow (dry, hard wool breaks off), and before the exhibition, do not wash, but use exhibition makeup .
If the coarse hair is cut, it is more important not to wash it, but comb it (you can use a balm or a special spray against curls), since without regular combing your pet will be covered with shells of curls. In this case, you can wash it once a month, or you can wash it once every 3-4 months, this is not so important.
