How to prepare your dog for air travel

You are moving to a distant country or are planning a long trip and will have an air flight, and everything is complicated by the fact that you decide to take the dog with you. In this case, the pet needs to be prepared for the upcoming events, because for the dog air travel is not an easy test.

How to prepare your dog for air travel?

1. Begin training well in advance. Remember that two to three weeks may not be enough.
2. Learn the rules for air transportation of dogs in advance. Please note that they differ from all carriers. When booking a ticket, be sure to warn that a dog is flying with you.
3. Check the rules for importing dogs into the country of destination - all countries have their own rules.
4. Train your dog in boxing (cage). This is especially important if the pet is large and has to fly in the luggage compartment or if airline rules do not allow the transportation of dogs, even small ones, in the cabin. Remember that the correct training of the dog to the cage takes a lot of time, sometimes several months. And it is necessary to specify in advance the boxing requirements for transporting dogs, including the size of the cage and the maximum allowable weight of the animal. Most likely, the box will have to be insulated, because the luggage compartment is cold.
5. Prepare the necessary documents in advance, including veterinary certificates.
6. On the day of the flight, you should not feed the dog, but it is simply necessary to drink and walk well.
7. Try not to excite the dog with unnecessarily emotional charges. The less the pet is excited, the easier it will take the trip.
8. Prepare and securely attach to the side card where information about the dog and owner will be recorded, preferably in several languages.
9. When boxing will be taken away, refrain from emotions. Say goodbye to the dog as before going to work, nothing more. Your pet does not need any extra worries.
10. If you believe that you cannot do without sedatives, you need to consult a veterinarian at least three weeks before the trip and start giving medications that have a cumulative effect at least two weeks in advance. However, make sure that the products you give your dog are not prohibited by the rules of the airline.
11. Meet the dog as calmly as possible, and if the pet is mad about meeting you, let it out of boxing only when it calms down a bit.
