German shepherd: reviews. “Nothing is impossible for a German Shepherd”
Nicole appeared with us by chance - we did not plan to get a German shepherd. My mother wanted a big dog, so I was flipping through all the ads on the site - about wailing, and ridgebacks, and other breeds. We found an advertisement for German Shepherd puppies and went to watch. I wanted to choose another puppy, but Nicole came into my mother’s hands first.
Why did the German Shepherd choose?
Nicole was in the puppy ad photo and she hooked her mom with something.
Mom swore to me that the dog would be hers, that she herself would look after the pet, walk it. But I knew that in a couple of months the dog would be mine. And so it happened.
What are the pros and cons of a German shepherd?
I believe that a normal German shepherd should be either a phlegmatic or a sanguine, that is, quite calm. Nicole can be played exclusively with the help of the ball, and the rest of the time she just weaves from behind on walks. She is very calm with us.
From experience: How smart she is! All teams Nicole captures just on the fly. And if we undertook to learn something, then in 2 days the team will be worked out to the standard.
In the family, Nicole loves everyone and requires everyone to communicate. I can’t say that she is obsessive, but if someone comes up to pet her, the dog will never mind: substitutes a puziko and lays down on its back. She is at any moment ready to caresses, but she will not pester herself. Well, if she gets bored of lying on the spot all day, Nicole can bring a toy and chat somehow - we will stroke her, and she goes back to her place.
Nicole is very vulnerable. If she does not fulfill the command the first time and I shout at her, the dog is very offended. And if it suits, then it is sluggish, or even it can completely pass by.
How Nicole is a Curious Dog?
Rather, she is an observer who shows interest from the outside. If we do something, she lies in her place and observes, controls the situation. But if she sees something new on the street, then she will definitely come and smell. On the street she is much more curious than at home.
Nicole fearful or brave?
In this regard, Nicole is very strange.
We were engaged in guard and guard service, taught to respond correctly to the attack, but once we went to the park, where bottles were hung on sticks to scare away birds. The wind just blew, shook these bottles - she was so shy! Or, it happens, someone comes after us, rustles a packet - she abruptly runs forward and only then will turn around to see what it was.
How does Nicole relate to other people, acquaintances and strangers?
In the family, this is the perfect dog! I have a younger sister and brother. Brother is 7 years old, and sister is 2 years old. And they often pester Nicole. Of course, we do not allow too much, but Nicole treats them very restrained.
From experience: The dog also treats other people's children normally. Earlier, before training, she perceived children with caution, she could growl, but when we started to practice with her, it passed. Nicole understood how to behave with other people, including children. Now, if we are asked if it is possible to pet the dog, I say “it is possible”, I show Nicole with a gesture, so that she goes to the child and allows herself to pet.
She also began to relate to adults calmly after training. Nicole is moderately friendly. At first she treats everyone with caution, but then, when she sees that there is no danger, she relaxes and allows herself to be stroked. However, if someone makes sudden movements or raises his voice, he may growl or react in some other way.
How does Nicole get along with other animals?
In addition to Nicole, we have fish, chinchilla and rabbit. They live peacefully, no one chases anyone.
From experience: The dog appeared first, and when they brought the rabbit, immediately made friends with him. Now the rabbit moves freely around the apartment, and they communicate with Nicole. At first, Nicole poked her nose into the rabbit, but we explained that this should not be done, and now she communicates more restraintly. We don’t let chinchilla run freely yet.
As for cats on the street, Nicole tries to run after them, but on the command “to me” immediately turns around and runs back.
She does not react to birds on the street at all.
Nicole treats other dogs selectively. As a rule, she sniffs with other dogs and leaves - she is more interesting with me.
However, Nicole has a best friend - the tiger cane-corso Zeus. Even if she sees him from afar, she stares intently and says with all appearance: well, let's go play now!
Nicole's other friend is Jack Husky. We go to competitions together.
How does Nicole endure loneliness?
This was a problem before training. We left toys, limited space, but nothing helped. But once I got out, she started to howl, I came back and hit her in the face - since then we have been quiet in the apartment.
As for things, Nicole never spoiled them.
Does Nicole bark a lot?
It seems to me that dogs bark a lot from overexcitation, but since Nicole is calm, we have no such problem. When she rings the doorphone or door, she can bark a couple of times and calms down. Now, if someone pulls the pen, then, of course, it will bark.
What is Nicole's favorite pastime?
Nicole loves to swim! Sometimes she runs into the water without demand. But she hates to wash. If you put it in the bath, it immediately hangs up your ears, makes sad eyes and with all its appearance shows how uncomfortable she is.
How was Nicole training? What are you doing with her?
Nicole has a very good mother with a stable nervous system. Therefore, the training was very easy, although Nicole and I began to practice at 2 years old.
From experience: If we practice tricks associated with great mobility, for example, jumping over a barrier, she is motivated by a toy. If some special movements are not required, then a treat is used.
We practice with Nicole every day. And when I went to dog training courses, we were introduced to such sports as cynological all-around. This is something like OKD, but in Belarus I do not know the instructors who would accept the delivery of OKD. We have exactly the cynological all-around. It is divided into 3rd, 2nd, 1st and highest leagues, and after a couple of competitions we will close 1st place in Belarus in the 3rd league and go to the 2nd league, where everything is a little more complicated.
I also want to do Frisbee. Once we were given a professional plate to play on a walk, and Nicky became very interested.
In principle, it seems to me that nothing is impossible for a German shepherd, she can be taught anything - this is a universal dog. True, I think that in an IPO, dogs need more mobile and choleric ones - for example, Belgian shepherds or Dobermans.
How well does a German shepherd manage?
If you train a dog and learn at least basic commands, it will be an ideal dog.
First of all, we learned the command “Near”, and now I can go through the road, through parks, etc. without a leash.
How independent is Nicole?
I don’t know about other shepherds, but Nicole always focuses on me before making a decision. She does not make independent decisions.
For example, before we had a terrible problem - picking up from the ground. The dog ate everything it finds! And now this has not gone to the end, but even then, if you want to pick something up, Nicole first looks at me: is it worth it?
How do you feed Nicole?
Nicole eats whatever they give. She is not picky at all, and there is no problem with appetite - she will eat 3 servings, if given. Even during illness Nicole did not refuse food.
From experience: We are on natural feeding: meat, porridge, vegetables and fruits. The amount of food per day I did not count - everything is issued "by eye". For the whole day she eats a large bowl with the top.
In the form of promotion, cheese, sausage or dried lungs are used in the summer, and in the cold season we give her drying - she is ready to sell her soul for them!
How do you care for a German shepherd?
Nicole molts 2 times a year. Shedding is strong, but ends quickly. I comb it a couple of times - and that’s it. Perhaps this is due to good nutrition. We sweep during molting several times a day and comb out on each walk. We use a pooderka, we are also planning to buy a furminator.
We wash Nicole after each estrus and as pollution. Once a week, on average, you have to wash your stomach, because in wet weather it collects their stomach.
Claws often cut. They are for the first time Nicole’s life with us, when we did not cut her claws, grew strongly, and we are now trying to remove all this gradually.
We clean our teeth as necessary (when I see that a yellow coating appears - about once every 2 to 3 months). But we also buy special bones that brush our teeth.
Nicole tolerates heat well, and the cold season is paradise for her.
From experience: As regards training for walking, I don’t even remember how it all happened in our country. We did not wait for quarantine and began to take the puppy out into the street at 2 months old. And, probably, in 3 walks she was almost completely accustomed to walking. From the fourth or fifth day it was limited to only one puddle per day, and even then it was extremely rare.
Now we walk Nicole 2 times a day, although, if there is an opportunity and desire, I can take her out in the afternoon, but for about twenty minutes. In the morning we walk with her for at least an hour, and each time these are active walks (for example, ball games). In the evening we repeat the learned commands, walk for about 30 - 40 minutes, you can lie down somewhere. She walks for 1.5 - 2 hours, and almost every walk we learn new tricks and new teams.
What do German shepherds have with health?
I don’t know if the German Shepherd has any health problems. The only thing I heard about is the crooked hind legs.
Nicole has no health problems. We go to the veterinary clinic once a year for routine vaccinations. Once she was sick with gastroenteritis - apparently, unsuccessfully drank from a puddle.
To whom, in your opinion, is a German shepherd suitable?
It seems to me, like any dog, a German shepherd is suitable for someone who has time to practice a dog.
In order to live comfortably with a dog, you must definitely learn at least basic commands (“To Me”, “Fu”, “Walk”, etc.) so that you can control your pet in any situation. It is necessary to go to new places, because the shepherd dog needs new impressions and mental stress.
